So, what does a fibromyalgia flare up feel like? I have seen this question posted on Facebook and in a few forums recently. I just want to say…lucky you. There was a time when I thought a fibro flare was being more tired, more run down and in a little more pain than usual. I was wrong.

A fibromyalgia flare up is an acute attack when symptoms are more intense.

Today, I am sitting here with an ice pack on my lower back and my tens unit connected to the middle of my back and shoulders. I am into day 6 of a major flare up.

The pain started on the right side of my lower back and I had pain in my right calf. Now the stabbing, shooting pain goes from my back, down my whole right leg and into my foot.

I can’t lay, sit or stand for long. When I get up from sitting, I get muscle spasms in my back and leg and can barely walk. I am just grateful that I don’t have a migraine on top of everything else.

The thing is…it’s my own fault. Trying to get this blog up and running, I have been sitting at the computer too long with no breaks. I haven’t been doing any yoga or stretching and now I am paying for it.

The most frustrating thing about fibromyalgia is the limitations it puts on your life. Even when you are feeling pretty good, you have to be careful not to overdo. Oh well, a flare doesn’t last forever, right?

How do you handle flare-ups?
