Light sensitivity medically known as photophobia, affects 80 percent of migraineurs. Light doesn’t just trigger migraine pain -it makes an existing migraine worse. So when I was invited to try out TheraSpecs Migraine Glasses, I jumped at the chance.

Disclosure: “I have been given TheraSpecs Indoor Migraine Glasses as part of a product review through the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by either company.“

TheraSpecs migraine glasses are made with a specialty tint that filters out specific parts of the light that cause or exacerbate problems such as migraines, eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue. The glasses were created by Hart Shaffer in order to help his wife’s debilitating headaches.

The rose-colored tint used in TheraSpecs migraine glasses is known as FL-41 tint. The FL-41 tint filters out certain wavelengths of blue light that are particularly bothersome to people with light sensitivity. Research shows that FL-41 glasses can relieve painful light sensitivity, reduce migraine attack frequency, and protect you from fluorescent and flickering lights.

A clinical study of the FL-41 tint used in TheraSpecs showed that study participants experienced, on average, 74 percent fewer migraine attacks per month. TheraSpecs migraine glasses come in an array of styles and are available with an indoor lens or an outdoor lens.

TheraSpecs Indoor Migraine Glasses

The Indoor Migraine Glasses are designed to be worn near artificial lights and while working on a computer. Since I wear prescription glasses, I chose the Over Rx frame. The moment I put them on I noticed how they cut the glare and within a few minutes, my eyes felt more relaxed.

I spend a lot of time on my computer and I am especially bothered by fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lights are hard to avoid because they are everywhere -in every store, office, and public place.

Fluorescent lights, as well as computer and television screens, are more likely to trigger migraine headaches because they flicker. Most of this flicker goes completely unnoticed. However, our brain is still aware of the flickering which can cause many people to feel sick.

TheraSpecs Indoor Migraine Glasses protect the eyes and brain by filtering out the wavelengths of light where the flicker is concentrated. I’ve been wearing the glasses whenever I am exposed to fluorescent lighting, working on the computer, reading on my kindle and watching tv. They definitely make my eyes more comfortable and less sensitive to light.

Light is not my only migraine trigger so the glasses haven’t stopped all my headaches. TheraSpecs indoor migraine glasses have certainly helped with the severity and duration of light-triggered migraines. Overall I am very pleased. I recommend TheraSpecs migraine glasses to anyone who struggles with light sensitivity and light-triggered migraines.

  1. I don’t suffer from migraines, but have recently become quite sensitive to fluorescent lighting. I get dizzy and nauseous as you describe above. You mention in the article that the glasses did not eliminate your migraines, but how did it perform regarding the dizzines and nausea?
    Thanks.

    • Hi, Dave. Theraspec lenses definitely help with light sensitivity regardless if a migraine is present or not. My migraine triggers include odors also. That is why these glasses do not prevent all of my headaches. Although, they certainly ward off migraines caused by lights such as fluorescent lights. And yes they help with nausea and dizziness. Did you know that you can have a migraine without a headache? I told my doctor that I was having nausea and dizziness and seeing pinpoints of light. She pointed out that these were classic symptoms of a migraine only without the headache part. She suggested I take my migraine medication when this happened. I did and it helped. So it is possible that you are experiencing this also.
