Turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-cancer properties. It is also a very effective pain reliever. But with so many different turmeric supplements available from so many different manufacturers, how do you choose the best Turmeric Curcumin supplement?

Disclosure: “I was given a bottle of Ultra Pure Turmeric Curcumin from Schwartz Bioresearch in exchange for this review. Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.“

Turmeric Is Widely Studied

Turmeric has been reported as a potential treatment for diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, psoriasis, and Alzheimer’s. Research shows curcumin can reduce depression and pain severity. In fact, it has been found to help over 500 different health conditions.

One study reported the effect of curcumin extract on fibromyalgia. The study utilized flexofytol, an extract obtained from curcumin, on patients suffering from fibromyalgia and gout. When turmeric was administered to patients suffering from fibromyalgia, there was a reduction in pain, muscle cramps, dizziness, and palpitations.

Another study on patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed curcumin directly attacked inflammation rather than simply masking pain and other symptoms. This study was the first to demonstrate that curcumin is superior to a standard anti-inflammatory drug used for rheumatoid arthritis. Curcumin was also free of any of the side effects that accompany drug therapy.

Curcumin Has Low Bioavailability

One of the biggest drawbacks of using turmeric is that it is very poorly absorbed by the body. This is called bio-availability. If the curcumin supplement you are taking is not being absorbed into your body this limits the health benefits it can offer. In fact, curcumin powders and supplements can be so poorly absorbed that NO curcumin is actually found in the bloodstream.

One of the ways that bioavailability is increased in a turmeric supplement is by adding piperine. Piperine is a chemical found in black pepper that has been shown to increase curcumin absorption by up to 2000%. The most researched and trusted form of black pepper extract is BioPerine®. Supplements that contain 10mg of BioPerine® are found to be the most effective in boosting curcumin levels.

You can also take your turmeric curcumin supplement with a healthy fat to increase absorption in the stomach. Some good options include salmon, dark chocolate, flaxseed oil, coconut milk, almond butter or any high-quality nut butter except peanut butter which is a highly inflammatory food.

Another option is to combine your turmeric supplement with quercetin, a compound found in apples, onions, grapes, citrus fruit, dark cherries, dark berries such as blueberries and blackberries, and more. Quercetin inhibits the enzymes that deactivate curcumin.

No Consistency In Quality Among Turmeric Curcumin Supplements

When choosing a curcumin supplement, you want to make sure it is the best product for your money. And for your health. Turmeric curcumin supplements vary in quality, strength, and purity. In order to cut costs, some turmeric curcumin supplements contain binders, fillers, and artificial ingredients which have no nutritional value and in some cases, may be toxic.

At least 33% of the turmeric curcumin supplements tested by ConsumerLab.com failed to provide the expected dosage. More than 20% of turmeric curcumin supplements they selected for review delivered less than 15% of the advertised amount of curcumin.

It’s important that you choose a turmeric curcumin supplement that meets strict standards of quality. Read the label carefully and look for 95% standardized curcumin. Choose a brand that has third-party testing and verification of the ingredients on their label and its effectiveness.

Why I Recommend Schwartz Bioresearch Ultra Pure Turmeric Curcumin

Schwartz Bioresearch Ultra Pure Turmeric CurcuminPin

I have been taking a turmeric supplement for over 6 months and I really didn’t see any difference in my pain levels or how I felt overall. In researching for this article I found out the supplement I was taking was in the 33% that failed in ConsumerLab’s review. After 3 weeks of taking Schwartz Bioresearch Ultra Pure Turmeric Curcumin, I feel my pain levels have decreased a little and my mood has improved. The dizzy spells I have been experiencing seem to have stopped, too.

According to the Maryland Medical Center, the recommended dosage of turmeric supplement is 400 – 600 mg, 3 times per day.

Schwartz Bioresearch Turmeric Curcumin supplement has 1500mg of Turmeric Curcumin with 95% Standardized Curcuminoids. For increased absorption and bioavailability their Turmeric Curcumin formula has 10mg of BioPerine® per serving, which is proven to dramatically enhance your body’s absorption of Curcumin.

Precautions

Turmeric and curcumin supplements are considered safe. However, you should talk to your doctor if you have health problems and/or are taking medications and other supplements.

Reported problems with Turmeric include:

  • Taking large amounts of turmeric for long periods of time may cause stomach upset and, in extreme cases, ulcers.
  • People who have gallstones and diabetes should talk to their doctor before taking turmeric.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take turmeric supplements.
  • Because turmeric may act like a blood thinner, you should stop taking it at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Turmeric may interact with or strengthen the effects of certain drugs such as blood-thinning medications, diabetes medications, and drugs that reduce stomach acid.

  3. Totally confused as when one reads reviews one finds they have an axe to grind as they cannot be unbiased if given free product!

    • Hi, Pamela. There have been products I haven’t liked or didn’t seem to work for me. When that happens I am honest with the company. Most of the time they request to cancel the review. It’s also important to note that fibromyalgia effects each of us in different ways. A medication or supplement that helps me might not help you.
